Canada cannot participate in Board of Peace, Trump to revoke the invitation

U.S. President Donald Trump has revoked an invitation to Canada to participate in his new program, the Board of Peace, which he recently introduced and is the next stage in the relationship between Washington and Ottawa after the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was critical at the World Economic Forum in Davos. On Thursday (January 22, 2026), Mr. Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that the board was withdrawing the invitation of Canada, and that he considered the group to be the most prestigious Board of Leaders of all time. This was soon reversed when Mr. Carney gave a very popular speech in Davos where he condemned the great powers that were using economic integration as a political tool and tariffs as a bargaining chip. Mr. Another argument that Carney made is that global order based on rules is coming to a close and she proposed that the middle powers ought to collaborate to prevent American hegemony.

According to Reuters, his comments elicited an uncharacteristically high standing ovation by delegates. Mr. Trump retorted by noting that Canada owes its existence to the United States and that Mr. Carney should not become unappreciative to the previous U.S. assistance. He reminded the Canadian leader that he had told an audience in Davos, that the next time Mark would make his statements, he must remember them.

The white house and the office of Mr. Carney did not respond immediately to requests regarding comments on Thursday evening. The Board of Peace that Mr. Trump officially unveiled a few hours before recalling the invitation extended to Canada, which was originally devised to assist in the peaceful settlement of a ceasefire in Gaza. Permanent members under the proposal will be required to contribute $1 billion each in a bid to finance the operations of the board. According to Trump, the board would take a broad mandate to operate together with the United Nations once it is constituted. A U.N. spokesperson said that the U.N. would only be involved in the board on the frame of the Gaza peace plan proposed by Mr. Trump, which has been supported with a Security Council resolution. Countries that are already members are Argentina, Bahrain, Morocco, Pakistan and Turkey, and the major allies of the U.S, including Britain, France and Italy have already stated that they will not join at the moment.
