A new surge of new COVID-19 variant KP.2 is causing infections and health disorders across the globe. Nearly 100 COVID-19 active cases have been reported from Maharashtra, Pune and the adjacent areas. The Maharashtra government has identified and confirmed 91 active cases of Omicron sub-variant KP.2 causing the new COVID-19. The number has exceeded the previous record of the JN.1 variant. Pune is now on the top with the highest number of KP.2 cases that reached 51. Thane is following Pune closely with 31 active cases (just behind 20 active cases).
KP.2, the new variant of COVID-19, has started making headlines in many countries across the globe for its high infection rates and contagious character.
KP.2, the new variant of COVID-19, has started making headlines in many countries across the globe for its high infection rates and contagious character. Maharashtra was the first Indian state to initially identify and report the cases of the KP.2 variant in January. It had been the most dominant strain in Maharashtra in the month of March and April.
Dr Rajesh Karyakarte, the genome sequencing coordinator for the state of Maharashtra, observed and confirmed that although a surge was found in the number of cases in Maharashtra, the report of severe cases and hospitalization corresponding to a rise or surge was low. A small rise in active cases was found in March, reaching 250 detections on average as a consequence of the transmission of KP.2 sub-variant. As per the research report, it originated from JN.1, the most prevalent Covid strain at the end of 2023.
Seven more cases were reported from Amravati and Aurangabad, excluding Pune and Thane. Moreover, two more cases were from Solapur and one active case for each from Nashik, Ahmednagar, Latur, and Sangli. Most significantly, no active case was reported from Mumbai.
