Canada’s 2025 Express Entry Overhaul: Is a Job Offer Still Your Golden Ticket?
In 2025, Canada’s Express Entry system has changed considerably, and many people wishing to immigrate to Canada are talking about these changes. The most significant change? No longer giving out direct Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points for arranged employment (job offers) from March 25, 2025. The intention is to reduce fraud and create a fair playing field. But, does this mean that a Canadian job offer is no longer your best path to permanent residency? Not exactly.
Although the immediate CRS boost is now gone, a job offer remains valuable for many reasons. For example, a valid job offer is needed for many Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs – pathways to Permanent Resident straight from your valid work permit), as many PNPs require valid job offers from an employer in their province. Nearly half of Canada’s 80+ PNP streams require valid job offers; therefore, it is highly valued for applicants looking to permanent resident status in specific regions.
Second, working in Canada through a job offer has the potential to contribute indirectly to your CRS score. The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is one of the main Express Entry programs, and it offers large amounts of Points for those individuals who have at least a year of skilled Canadian work experience. In fact, in recent draws IRCC has been increasing the amount of CEC candidates they have been inviting. Therefore, a job offer can be a great way to gain this rare and highly sought after Canadian work experience which can yield you up to 180 CRS Points.
Additionally, new immigration pilots, such as the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP), and Rural & Francophone Immigration Pilots, still require a job offer from a designated employer. These programs often have faster processing times and are designed to fill specific regional labour shortages.
Ultimately, an employer’s direct points for a job offer under Express Entry is no longer available. However, it is still a key player in the immigration process. It opens up a plethora of provincial pathways, allows for Canadian work experience- which contributes to a significant CRS and CIC boost, and is a basic requirement for several immigration programs that have been established.
While a job offer does not equate to a “golden ticket” for direct points, for your quest for Canadian permanent residency in 2025, having a job offer still provides excellent assistance.
