Aiming to be a leader in technology and innovation, Canada is developing and applying artificial intelligence (AI) to research centres, government sectors, businesses and start-ups. To ensure a better future for all Canadians, Canada announced a national AI strategy for the first time in the country in 2017. As the pilot project, the AI strategy was implemented in top-rated research centres in Canada.
As a consequence, world-class research centres like Mila –-Quebec AI Institute, Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) and the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Toronto appointed world-class talents (having a full span of knowledge in AI). It was an attractive and highly acclaimed venture worldwide.
Now, it has been integrated and implemented in a wide range of sectors and industries- supply chains, business model transformation, workforce management, and other working practices.
François-Philippe Champagne, the honourable Minister of Innovation and Science and Industry, declared an investment of $30 million to an innovative AI and robotics company named Sanctuary Cognitive Systems Corporation. Headquartered in Vancouver, Sanctuary Cognitive Systems Corporation will receive support of $120.8 million total from the Government through the Strategic Innovation Fund to develop general-purpose robots with artificial intelligence to function like human beings. The company will develop human-like robots to function both physically and cognitively.
These will be efficient enough to execute different types of jobs in various sectors and perform other jobs that require hard toil and continuous physical labour. The objective is to execute laborious and intellectual works involving risks and dangers. These could save human lives from accidents. Industries like nuclear or chemical maintenance, mining, military, aviation, and space operations will deploy these robots. Moreover, the industries facing labour shortages like the healthcare and manufacturing industries will use these to perform various tasks.
The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring Canadians can use their ideas to provide the country with the best funding to Canadian intellectual property for rich firms.
